Warren and Rogue Moonlight ficlet for
justalilcontactIt was their tradition. At least it was tradition since they had been in the village that no matter what they were doing, if they were nearby Warren would take Rogue on a ride during the full moon. She was the one responsible for him 'outing' himself so to speak and this was his gift to her.
He glanced at the moon casting its glow through the window panes and then over to the clock that was lit. Almost midnight. Perfect. Warren shed his top, laying it neatly over the end of his bed. His wings felt so much better when there was no material restricting them. Warren opened the window and climbed out onto the roof of the mansion.
The bright moonlight illuminated the landscape, making it easy to see. His gaze flicked over the horizon then he chuckled when he saw another form on the roof top. "Hey, a gentleman is supposed to pick up the lady fair."
"Couldn't wait, sugar." Rogue's voice was soft on the night air as she walked closer to Warren.
When Rogue was close enough to see him, Warren waggled his eyebrows at her. "You're going to make me blush with your need to be with me." He was teasing her even as he held out his arms. "All aboard for Air Warren. I promise a smooth flight."
Her small hands made sure that the gloves were in place and all of her skin was covered where she would touch Warren before she allowed him to lift her into his arms. "I've heard those honeyed words before."
Warren laughed, and scooped her up into his arms seconds before he took off from the mansion's roof. The air currents were easy to navigate and soon they were rising above the trees dipping and rolling.
"Do you miss it?" Rogue asked quietly.
He was about to ask what but knew what she meant. Warren thought it over silently for a moment before he answered. "Yeah, sometimes. I was a lot freer there than I am here and not just the responsibilities at Worthington Industries. The only time I don't have my wings covered up most of the time is when I'm here at the mansion."
This time, though his wings were hidden for safety rather than the other nine hundred billion reasons he'd hid them before Haurvatat. The Friends of Humanity were becoming more numerous and volatile. He didn't fear them but it was always better to be safe than sorry. Even Kurt and Beast had taken to wearing holographic imagers around their necks to appear 'normal' in person outside of the mansion.
"What about you? Do you miss being in Haurvatat?" Warren asked softly as he rose further up into the full moon's light.
Rogue was quiet for a few moments and Warren wondered if she was going to answer. He knew it was probably hard on her since she'd been 'gone' the longest.
"Yeah, I do. Didn't have to worry about anything about being a mutant and I could just be me."
Warren tightened his arms around her as they flew higher. Maybe this was their way of being back in the village. A way to leaving all of the worries and stress below. Up here in the pale moonlight, they were just Warren and Marie enjoying fun times together.
"Here's to just being us." He smiled at Rogue and dove down fast. Her squeal of laughter and cussing floated behind them in the night sky.
